Brief Biography

After graduating from the Faculty of General Medicine of Tomsk Medical Institute, Sergey V. Popov worked as a surgeon and an anesthesiologist, and, later, he held the positions of junior, senior and leading research scientist in the Branch of the All-Union Cardiology Research Center of the Academy of Medical Sciences of USSR.
In 1988, he defended doctoral thesis titled "Comparative efficacy of relieving paroxysmal tachycardias by various methods of electrical stimulation" for an academic degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences. In 1996, he defended doctoral thesis titled "Electrical methods of diagnosis and control over pharmacological therapy and treatment of paroxysmal tachycardias and tachyarrhythmias" for an academic degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences. Since 1992, he has been a Head of the Department of Cardiac Pacing and Heart Arrhythmia Surgical Treatment. In 2002, he was elected a Deputy Director for Research and Clinical Work of Cardiology Research Institute of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
In 2000, Sergey V. Popov was awarded an academic title of Professor and, in 2010, a title of Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation. In 2011, he was elected a Corresponding-Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in discipline of Cardiology and, in October, 2016, a Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
In 2016, he was assigned as a Director of Cardiology Research Institute and as a Deputy Director for Science and Clinical Work of Tomsk NRMC.

Research Interests

Primary research interests of Sergey V. Popov comprise the study of the electrophysiological mechanisms of heart rhythm and conductance disorders as well as challenges of their diagnosis, pharmacological, interventional, and surgical treatment. Sergey V. Popov is one of the leading scientists in the field of clinical electrophysiology of the heart and interventional arrhythmology. He is an author of 822 scientific works including 26 books and 26 authorship certificates and patents. After his election as a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2011, he published 147 scientific works including 6 books and 4 patents.

Achievements, awards, and grants

Sergey V. Popov made substantial contribution to discovery of pathophysiological mechanisms of various forms of cardiac arrhythmias; he developed and implemented into clinical practice a number of original surgeries, devices, and instruments for diagnosis and radical high-tech interventional treatment of arrhythmias including life-threatening disorders in patients of different age even in newborns. Under his direct supervision, the network of arrhythmology divisions in the region of Siberia and Far East was created; Siberian Arrhythmology Center became the largest arrhythmology clinic of the country.
For the first time in Russia, Sergey V. Popov developed and implemented the method of radiofrequency ablation of cardiac arrhythmias. He implanted new-generation biventricular electric cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators for treatment of patients with severe heart failure. Being a worldwide renowned Russian cardiologist, Sergey V. Popov promotes achievements of his team abroad and regularly gives talks at symposia, conferences, and meetings in the USA, Switzerland, Spain, China, Austria, Italy, and India.
Under supervision of Sergey V. Popov, 10 dissertations for a degree of Doctor of Sciences and 35 dissertations for a degree of Candidate of Sciences (equivalent of Ph.D.) have been defended.
Sergey V. Popov is a member of editorial boards of the following peer-reviewed journals: International Journal of Biomedicine (USA), Complex Issues of Cardiovascular Diseases, Journal of Arrhythmology, and Siberian Medical Journal (Russia).
Sergey V. Popov is a Vice-President of the All-Russian Scientific Society of Arrhythmology, a member of the European and International Societies of Cardiology, European Heart Rhythm Association, Coordination Council of the A.N. Bakoulev Scientific Center for Cardiovascular Surgery (the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation).
For his excellence and long-standing and fruitful work, Sergey V. Popov has been awarded with the government and community awards: Honorary Diploma of the All-Russian Scientific Society of Arrhythmology "For Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Diagnostics and Treatment of Heart Rhythm Disorders" and Honorary Diplomas of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation and the Russian Academy of Science. He is a laureate of Tomsk Region Award in the Field of Science and Healthcare.
