Brief Biography
After graduating from the Faculty of General Medicine of Tomsk Medical Institute, Evgeny L. Choynzonov worked as a surgeon and, later, he held the positions of junior, senior and leading research scientist in the Branch of the All-Union Oncology Research Center of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.
In 1984, he defended his doctoral thesis titled “Treatment of patients with oral cavity cancer and its influence on immunity system” for an academic degree of Candidate of Sciences (equivalent of Ph.D.). In 1995, he defended his doctoral thesis titled “Cancer of the upper respiratory and digestive tracts” for an academic degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences. Since 2004, he has been a Head of the Department of Head and Neck Tumors.
In 2002, Evgeny L. Choynzonov was awarded the rank of Professor. In 2005, he was elected a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in discipline of Oncology, and in 2011, a Member of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. From 2002 to 2016, Prof. Choynzonov was appointed as Director of Cancer Research Institute.
Since July 1, 2016, Evgeny L. Choynzonov has been a Director of Tomsk NRMC. Since December, 2018, Evgeny L.Choynzonov has been a Director of Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk National Research Medical Center.
Research Interests
The main research interests of Evgeny L. Choynzonov focus on the development of novel approaches to surgical treatment of head and neck cancer patients using implants from the porous titanium-nickelid, microsurgical autografting, organ-preserving and reconstructive surgeries in combination with intraoperative radiation therapy and neutron therapy. Evgeny L. Choynzonov made substantial contribution to the study of mechanisms of carcinogenesis and identification of molecular markers associated with high risk of cancer progression. He developed and implemented into clinical practice a number of original surgeries, the most effective, safe, and cost-effective approaches for predictive, preventive and personalized cancer therapy. The current methods of vocal function recovery for laryngectomized patients using biological feedback based on a mathematical model were developed.
Under his direct supervision, new data on the mechanisms of the development of resistance of tumor cells to free radical damage were obtained, and clinical-epidemiological characteristics of primary multiple head and neck tumors were revealed.
Evgeny L. Choynzonov is an author of more than 800 scientific works including 19 books and 37 authorship certificates and patents. Under supervision of Evgeny L. Choynzonov, 10 dissertations for a degree of Doctor of Sciences and 19 dissertations for a Ph.D. degree have been defended.
Being a worldwide renowned Russian oncologist, Evgeny L. Choymzonov promotes achievements of his team abroad and regularly gives talks at symposia, conferences and meetings.
Evgeny L. Choynzonov is an Editor-in-Chief of the Siberian Journal of Oncology. He is a member of editorial boards of the following Russian journals: Problems in Oncology, Surgical Oncology, Head and Neck Tumors, Siberian Research Medical Journal, Sarcomas of Bones, Soft Tissues and Skin, Head and Neck. He is a member of the International peer-reviewed journal: Eurasian Journal of Oncology.
