The research is carried out by the Consortium initiated by the Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC, which has already been joined by the leading medical centers.
The agreement on the creation of the Consortium «Etiology and Pathogenesis of Early-Onset Oral Cancer» on the basis of the Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC was signed by representatives of N.N.Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Centre, National Medical Research Radiological Centre, Main Military Clinical Hospital named after Academician N.N. Burdenko, Loginov Moscow Clinical Scientific Center, and Sechenov University.
The consortium members will implement key research projects and create a joint biobank of biological samples and a register of clinical and pathological parameters of patients with oral cancer.
– The problem of oral cancer at a young age is extremely relevant because of its aggressiveness and the low effectiveness of standard treatment methods. Despite the fact that this problem is not new (the first mentions date back to the 40s of the last century), the mechanisms of development of this cancer are still not understood. This is probably due to both the complexity of the pathogenesis of the disease and the difficulties in recruiting research material due to the rare occurrence of this cancer. The consortium is designed to unite highly qualified clinical specialists and experimenters of various profiles and create a single biobank of biological samples to establish the causes of oral cancer at a young age and develop methods of its treatment, this is a new level task that would be difficult to solve on the basis of one organization, – commented the director of the Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC, Academician of RAS Evgeny Choynzonov.
Scientists plan to investigate the role of the immune system, microbiome, hereditary genetic variants and somatic mutations in the development and progression of oral cancer at a young age. The result of joint work will be new solutions for effective early diagnosis and therapy of this disease.
It is noted that the research will be conducted both at the Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC, and on the basis of other consortium members.
For reference.
Research projects of the Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC, aimed at studying various aspects of the development of oral cancer, have already received support: for example, in 2021, the project «Metagenomics of oral cancer in young patients» was supported by a Grant from the President of the Russian Federation (the project leader is Dr. Elena Kolegova, a researcher at the Laboratory of Cancer Progression Biology). In 2022, the project «Molecular landscape of oral cancer in young patients» was supported by a grant from the Russian Science Foundation (the project leader is Prof. Evgeny Choynzonov, an Academician of RAS, Director of the Cancer Research Institute of Tomsk NRMC).
